Building Forward: What One Walking Cane Represents

It has been two months since this year’s health fair, and we are still reflecting on what it means to build forward.

For the first time, our team distributed walking canes to some of the most vulnerable individuals who attended. On the surface, it may seem like a small addition to our services. But for the individuals who received them, it represented dignity, mobility, and independence.

In the communities we serve, many residents are farmers and traders. Their livelihoods depend on physical labor. Years of walking long distances, lifting heavy goods, standing for hours in open markets, and working farmland take a toll on the body. Over time, joint pain, untreated injuries, and age-related mobility challenges become daily realities.

With limited access to rehabilitative care and assistive devices, many individuals rely on makeshift supports. Sticks, unstable objects, or improvised tools become substitutes for proper mobility aids. Unfortunately, these temporary solutions often create additional strain and increase the risk of falls and injury.

This year, when we placed a proper walking cane in someone’s hand, it was not just about balance. It was about safety. It was about preventing further harm. It was about restoring a measure of confidence in daily movement.

Nigeria’s healthcare infrastructure is complex and deeply challenged. From workforce shortages to uneven rural access, there is no single solution that can address the gaps overnight. Sustainable change requires layered approaches: preventive care, education, partnerships, policy engagement, and consistent community presence.

That is what LAOF is building toward.

Each year, we aim to expand not just the number of people we serve, but the depth of support we provide. From prescription eyeglasses to preventive screenings, from malaria treatment support to mobility aids, our work continues to evolve in response to what our community actually needs.

Looking ahead, we are focused on three priorities:

  1. Expanding year-round engagement beyond the annual health fair.

  2. Strengthening partnerships with local health leaders and ministries.

  3. Increasing access to practical, preventive resources that improve everyday quality of life.

We believe health equity is built step by step. Sometimes that step looks like a pair of eyeglasses. Sometimes it looks like malaria medication. And sometimes, it looks like a walking cane.

As we look toward the coming year, including our next health fair, we are thinking bigger about reach, sustainability, and impact. We are preparing to serve more communities across Nigeria and exploring opportunities to extend our model in new ways.

If you have supported LAOF in any way, through volunteering, partnership, advocacy, or resources, you are part of this story. And if you are just learning about our work, we invite you to walk alongside us.

There is more ahead.

Stay connected. More is coming soon.
